PATHMARK MULTICULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL OPENS WITH

A WEEKEND OF FREE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCES

MAY 3 AND 4 AT JERSEY GARDENS IN ELIZABETH

Now in its 19th season, the Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival annually brings families and whole Northeastern communities together to celebrate traditional cultures in free live productions featuring international stars and talented performers from right next door. Free samples and prizes add to the fun. This year’s Festival season begins on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 in Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, with performances filling center court on the mall’s lower level from Noon to 5:00 on Saturday, Noon to 4:00 on Sunday.

Hosting the Festival is the popular actor and comedian, Rich Ramirez, whose credits run from films and TV roles to hot stage productions like “Latin Fever” at Atlantic City’s Tropicana.

Something Positive makes a first appearance in Jersey Gardens. Its beautiful presentation is a swirl of color as musicians and dancers recreate the glorious traditions that make the Caribbean famous. Brooklyn-based Something Positive artists blend poetry with storytelling, theater, music and dance. The ensemble performs nationally and internationally.

Anthony Rodriguez, dancer, singer, choreographer, arranger and composer returns to the program with his dance company, La Santa Luz. Rodriguez is just back from a remarkable tour in Turkey, where he performed for the country’s president and entertained TV audiences with his very personal fusion musical mix of Latin, flamenco, African, ballet, modern, jazz and urban. Back in the US, Rodriguez continues in residency in Nuvorican Poets Café in Manhattan and is promoting his record titled “Boricus Lover” in a busy schedule of appearances.

The Playa Players Drummers, Odalys Vazquez and Elba (Cookie) Melendez, describe their music as “explosive.” Vazquez brings years of experience as a percussionist to her congas, Melendez on bongos has the energy and passion that made her New York’s first female kick boxer. They play widely in the Metro area, specializing in the music of Puerto Rico.

The Seventh Principle ensemble performs drumbeats, calls and captivating movements created over centuries in Africa and the African Diaspora. Festival audiences, who are often drawn into the performance themselves, love the flamboyant costumes, authentic instruments and inspiring, athletic leaps and dances that are the ensemble’s signature.

The Multicultural Arts Festival is one of several events sponsored throughout the year by Pathmark as a way to say “thank you” to the communities that shop in its supermarkets. For more about the Pathmark Festival and any of the venues, call toll-free 866-894-1812 or visit Pathmark.com.
